Steel Containment
![]() | The containment is used for safe enclosure of all of the nuclear components of a nuclear power plant. In most cases it is a spherical shell of high-strength steel, which is provided with numerous gas-tight openings and penetrations. During power plant operation, a slight vacuum prevails in the containment which prevents radioactive substances from escaping into the surrounding area in the event of a leak. To cope with accidents it is dimensioned for specified overpressure loads. The relevant competence for design and construction is still available within Babcock Noell. |
Typical technical characteristics:
| Sphere diameter: | 56 m | |
| Design pressure: | 5,3 bar | |
| Weight: | approx. 2600 to |
