EPR Olkiluoto, Finland

Babcock Noell is involved in the construction of the new pressurized-water reactor of the third generation in Olkiluoto, Finland since end of 2003.

Babcock Noell in Würzburg received the order for important components of this new nuclear power station, type EPR (Evolutionary Power Reactor) Total contract volume: 17 million €.

The nuclear power station with the capacity of about 1.600 MW in the Finnish town of Olkiluoto is expected to start comrnercial operation in 2012 in addition to the two existing power station units.

The current order of Babcock Noell GmbH for this power station comprises:

  • The containment liner of the reactor building which guarantees the required tightness in all operating conditions
  • Airlocks for the reactor building which facilitate access with maintenance of the tightconditions to the outside
  • Pool liner for the fuel element and reactor pool with high demands on tightness for the whole period of operation (designed for 60 years)
  • Components for the RPV closure head equipment
  • Components of the core melt stabilization system
  • Various engineering orders and supplies of small parts

This success is due to many years of experience of Babcock Noell in the field of nuclear engineering. For the future it is expected that further power stations of this type will be built all over the world. France is considering for the medium and long term to replace its existing power stations by the EPR. The first project of this kind is to be a new nuclear power station of EDF in Flamanville. Babcock Noell is already bidding for contracts.
