Quadrupole and Corrector Magnets for HERA

Customer:DESY,

Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, Hamburg

Duration of project: 1986 – 1989

The HERA-Collider in Hamburg accelerates elektrons and protons in a 6.3 km long ring to conduct collision experiments to study the structure of protons. Quadrupole magnets are necessary for correcting the path of the accelerated particles and to focus the particle beam. Additional precision of the path and focusing of the particle beam are executed with multipole corrector magnets.

Babcock Noell assembled 120 quadrupole magnets of different types and manufactured the corresponding cryostats. Also in this contract, 233 12-pole correction coils (Dodecapoles) were wound, manufactured and assembled into the complete units.

Technical data for the HERA Quadrupole:

Length:2.6 - 5.1 m
Diameter:0.6 m
Total weight(standard type):2,000 kg
Field gradient:91 T/m
Rated current: 7,000 A
Operating temperature:4.2 K (-269 °C)
