Conception Planning

In conception planning, following the strategic planning, the details are worked out. The main areas concentrated on in conception planning are in particular the justification of the conception selection as well as the choice of the applicable technology.

Further areas concentrated on are the planning of residue treatment including costs and time limits. Particular attention is required to be given to highly activated or contaminated components such as the reactor pressure vessel, steam generator and primary circuit.

Encapsulation Plant SKB

With 11 power plant units in Sweden approx. 40 % of the electric power is generated in nuclear plants. The spent fuel elements are put into interim storage near Oskarshamn power plant. Final storage is carried out in copper canisters with an internal steel vessel. These will be storaged in granite formations. For SKB, a subsidiary of the Swedish public electricity supply companies, responsible for the final storage of the Swedish nuclear fuel, Babcock Noell worked out a conception for the packaging of the fuel elements in the final storage vessels.
