PHADEC (PHosphoric Acid DEContamination)

Plant for decontaminating radioactive contaminated steel components

Dismantling of nuclear plants often gives rise to a large quantity of radioactive contaminated (the surfaces contaminated with radioactivity) residue. By removing (decontaminating) of surface layers, the contaminated materials can be separated into reusable materials and radioactive waste.

For this purpose a process - known as the PHADEC method (PHosphoric Acid DEContamination) - has been developed that decontaminates contaminated steel by using phosphoric acid. In doing so, the components are immersed in a phosphoric acid bath and the contamination is dissolved. Remaining waste is less than 2%
