Prototype for Industrial Series Production of SIS 100 Dipoles

Project:Prototype for industrial series production of SIS 100 dipoles for the new FAIR heavy ion accelerator at GSI in Darmstadt
Client: / Location:GSI, Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt
Scope of supply:Planning, design, manufacture and delivery of a supraconducting dipole for the planned FAIR heavy ion accelerator

Based on the experience and technological developments in the existing accelerator systems used at GSI and taking account of new technological concepts, the objective is to create a next-generation accelerator system in the planned FAIR project (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research).

Its core is a double accelerator with a circumference of 1100 meters. To this is connected a complex system of storage rings and experimentation stations. Babcock Noell received the order from GSI to produce a prototype of a supraconductive dipole magnet type SIS 100.

This order also includes manufacturing the highly technologically challenging supraconductive cable. This procedure was performed at our plant in Zeitz on a cable stranding machine that was purchased and converted especially for the purpose.

Meanwhile the magnet was sucessfully cold tested.

Technical Data:

  • Maximum magnetic field: 2 tesla
  • Maximum rise speed of the field: 4 tesla per second
  • Total weight: 3.2 metric tonnes (including cryostat)
  • Yoke length: 2.7 m
