Study for Solenoid-System of a Neutron Spin-Echo-Spectrometer

Customer:

Research Centre Jülich, Germany

Duration of project: 2003 - 2004

A next generation Neutron Spin-Echo Spectrometer (NSE) will be installed at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in Oak Ridge by the Research Centre Jülich. The NSE measures tiny changes velocity of the spin-clock of a sample, while the neutron’s spin is precessing in a strong magnetic field. For the first time a superconducting solenoid will be used, to enhance the precision of measurements.

In line with a design-competition BNG has reviewed feasibility of the system, developed a magnet-design and won the contract over alternative designs.

Special features:

• Superconducting solenoids with minimized hysteresis
• Use of Pulse Tube Cryocoolers (cryogen free system)
• Position measurement of winding package during operation
